In this episode Josh brings on the mighty Ray Ortega [ aka @PodcastHelper ] from The Podcasters' Studio and The Podcasters' Roundtable. We discuss the following (Ray is total champ of a bloke, btw!!)

JOSH & RAY 'RAY':
• Providing Podcasting advice for the community first, and not to feed some slimy marketing agenda.
• Spend less time developing your audience avatar, and more working on making a great show that people will enjoy listening to.
• Podcast microphone myths and misconceptions.
• Podcast music pacing and encoding.

In this episode Josh brings on "podcasting teacher, not marketer" David Jackson from the School of Podcasting - we dig into the following:

  • Is Podcasting still a place to voice your honest feelings, thoughts and opinions?
  • Where do actually find your audience? ..and how in practice, does a new Podcaster find people who might want to hear your Pod.
  • Getting called out by a contemporary online.
  • People freaking out about movements in their podcasting stats.
  • The connections between a history in music and a future in podcasting.

In this episode Josh brings on the mighty Rob Greenlee and the guys go deep on the following:
• Podcasting, just for the fun of it.
• Ignoring bad podcasting advice.
• Radio consultants and their many agendas.
• The usefulness of podcast survey data in May of 2017

We also explore two different ideas that Rob is known for in Podcasting circles:
1) Why Rob is worried that the number of new Podcasters and the number of new Podcasts is outpacing the growth of listenership and audience.
2) What are the reasons that CPM's will most likely fall along with the growth of Dynamic Ad Insertion and Programmatic Ad Buying?

In this episode Josh takes on the letter F. F-for-Freedom. And he's not talking about some scam internet marketing type freedom, he's talking about creative freedom in the audio space.

The Podcasters' Survival Guide is a not-for-profit production from @joshuacliston and JCALdigital.org

The Podcasters' Anti-Glossary - E-for-Excessive. In this episode Josh takes us through how-to spot "Clever Spam" in Facebook groups

Clue #1: If the user prefaces their question with "I know I could have searched for the answer but I thought I'd ask anyway" or "I know this has been asked before but I wanted to see if things have changed."

Clue #2: If the user comments and sub-comments in group threads aggressively over a short period of time and then is nowhere to be found either for follow-up or to answer criticism of their ideas/comments.

Sub-commenting in bursts is the No.1 way I spot potential Spammers inside the Australian Podcasters' Group on Facebook (which I founded in 2013 and am still an admin for - we try to beat spammers to the punch wherever possible).

Podcasters' Anti-Glossary - C-for-Criticism.

Today Josh is wondering: Why are we not encouraged to critique or question the podcasting advice we're hearing from many corners of the Radio and Business world?"

ENTER THE TPSGUIDE.ORG MIC COMPETITION HERE :)

In this episode we look at six ideas for cutting the dollar-costs of Podcasting - either now or into the future:

  1. Look at the amount of media hosting you're currently paying for - if it's much more than you ever seem to use, then consider downgrading to a lower MB plan.
  2. Give some thought to cancelling any premium stats packages you're currently paying for, over and above reliable download numbers.
  3. Don't let the info-gurus convince you that you need a Wordpress site, Premium Themes, .coms. .nets .orgs. infos. .bankruptcies .etc, fancy email providers and myriad other website tools - let you website grow as your show grows.
  4. Don't move away from free DAW's (like Audacity and GarageBand) until you've plumbed all that they have to offer - YouTube is your friend!
  5. Don't let the guru's convince you that you're show isn't legit unless you're prepared to pay top dollar for their coaching, consulting and tools - art rarely thrives in the reductionist-mind.
  6. STOP buying new gear until you've really spent time with your current set-up.

In this episode Josh L and Josh A share some more thoughts on the Podcast recording app Ringr Mobile Website. (Josh L on iOS and Josh A on Android)

What Josh L did in post to the previous episode, and to the episode you're currently listening to:

  1. Opened the interviewer and interviewee files in Audacity and cleaned up some coughs, bumps and sniffles - exported as .wav1
  2. .wav was run through Auphonic for levelling and slight noise reduction - exported as .wav2
  3. .wav2 into Audition for EQ and Desser - exported as .wav3
  4. .wav3 into iTunes for .mp3 encoding
  5. .mp3 into Libsyn Upload.

The guys and their happiness with Ringr's App-iness:

  • Q) What was Ringr Mobile like to use? A) The App is generally very easy to use, and once you get your head around the Invite System (as the interviewer) and the Invite Codes (as the interviewee) the rest is butter.
  • Q) What was the in-call experience like as a user? A) This needs work, as the quality is low and on Josh A's side of the call (the Android side) he found the lack of volume controls to be bothersome.
  • Q) What is the quality like? IT'S REALLY REALLY GOOD considering how easy Ringr is to use. :)

The quality of Ringr's final product:

Overall it sounded great, was super fast to get back to us, was easy to access, and had a great natural vibe (like a phone call with a mate, without the rubbish sound of a traditional phone or mobile call).

Podcasting gear used in this episode:

  • Josh L: Apple Earbuds > iPhone 6+ > Ringr for iOS (from the Corolla)
  • Josh A: HTC earbuds > HTC Desire > Ringr for Android.
