In this episode Josh introduces the PODCASTERS' ANTI-GLOSSARY - todays letter is A for AVATAR

Some reasons discussed in this episode for why it might be time to challenge the Radio-Gurus about the value Audience Avatars in podcasting:

  • If Audience Avatars are so essential, why is radio in a long and eventual decline?
  • Radio style Audience Avatars may be victimised by Path Dependency.
  • The evaluation of any show (podcast or radio) using a super defined Avatar(s) is open to both confirmation bias and what Josh refers to as "ex-post facto attribution error."

Josh's Alternative to an Audience Avatar - "An obsessive focus on producing the very best show you can, firstly for you the producer, and then for the core group of initial listeners you gain." Forgetting about their age, sex, life stage, income level, etc - and keeping in mind that those things may in fact have no impact on why that person chose to listen to your show! ..maybe your show is just really good, and they enjoy it because they can't help but to enjoy it."

In this episode we look at six ideas for cutting the dollar-costs of Podcasting - either now or into the future:

  1. Look at the amount of media hosting you're currently paying for - if it's much more than you ever seem to use, then consider downgrading to a lower MB plan.
  2. Give some thought to cancelling any premium stats packages you're currently paying for, over and above reliable download numbers.
  3. Don't let the info-gurus convince you that you need a Wordpress site, Premium Themes, .coms. .nets .orgs. infos. .bankruptcies .etc, fancy email providers and myriad other website tools - let you website grow as your show grows.
  4. Don't move away from free DAW's (like Audacity and GarageBand) until you've plumbed all that they have to offer - YouTube is your friend!
  5. Don't let the guru's convince you that you're show isn't legit unless you're prepared to pay top dollar for their coaching, consulting and tools - art rarely thrives in the reductionist-mind.
  6. STOP buying new gear until you've really spent time with your current set-up.

In this episode Josh discusses some essential questions to ask yourself before you launch another Podcast.

  1. Is there something about your current podcast itself that makes you want to start another show?
  2. What things would I like to get Right this time around?
  3. Am I actually OK with the potential of my current show suffering due to my new show? (This extends to current co-hosts, advertisers, etc).

"Should I start another Podcast? ~ Josh says Hell Yes, if you really want to, then DO IT."

A question from Dave Haldane (check his show out here on iTunes https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/fireside/id1073508255?mt=2)

"What do you look for in a Podcast Media Host, and are the paid services really worth it?"

What Josh L DOES care about when it comes to Podcast Media Hosting:

  1. RSS Feed Integrity
  2. Australian download speeds, and reliability of delivery into Australia
  3. My host of choice doesn't alter my uploaded file in any way
  4. Quality FAQ's and support, plus the quality of shows the companies employees themselves create.
  5. A nice embedded audio player is a bonus
  6. The company has a solid financial roadmap

WHAT ABOUT MEDIA STATS? As Josh mentions in the episode he believes that super high quality Stats are already on offer from Libsyn, Blubrry, Spreaker and more, and in 2016, are really just the price of getting in the game!

What Josh L DOESN'T care so much about when it comes to Podcast Media Hosting:

  1. Hosting company branding in or on the tools provided (RSS Feeds, Audio Players, etc) a good set of tools can in fact send a positive message to your audience that you take yourself and your show's longevity seriously.
  2. Automatic ID3 tagging of .mp3 files
  3. The specs of the audio player, if the player is too slow to be functional it doesn't really matter how many cool things it can do!

Microphone Competition (click here for entry details plus T&C's)

TPSguide.org's Cardinal Sins of Podcasting s01e01 "Don't change the heart of a listener question to suit yourself!"

In today's episode Josh tackles a listener question from Josh Armour - "What are the Straight-Up-Don'ts of promoting an audio Podcast on Social media?"

Josh L has 3 BIG DON'TS for promoting your show on Social.

  1. Don't use your personal profiles as a SPAM ENGINE!
  2. Don't start posting in Social groups (Facebook, LinkedIn, etc) without first reading the group rules (if the group doesn't have them posted then reach out to the admins to see if the group has rules and/or display some patience and watch the way other group members use the group).
  3. Don't hi-jack the threads of more popular shows or your direct competition with links to your own episodes or audio samples.

Ask a podcasting Question in audio and go in the running to Win some sweet microphones from JCALdigital.org and The Podcasters' Survival Guide. Click Here :)

In this episode Josh shares his thoughts on a great question that Dave Gertler (@podcastdave on Twitter) asked inside of the Australian Podcasters Facebook Group.

His Q: "What one tool do you use to make your podcast better?"

Many members of the group jumped straight on this particular question with answers ranging from Audio Hijack to Beer/Coffee, but what also came up was the Auphonic Desktop App for Mac and Windows. This tool is also Josh's "Favourite and most Important Podcasting Tool" (as of August 2016).

A Few Common Reasons Josh L. (and many others) Love Auphonic.

  1. The Noise & Hum Reduction tool is so smart it's kinda creepy!
  2. Auphonic is so good at processing entire files (regardless of dynamic range and noise floor) that it can be used both before and after content editing. Josh in fact uses Auphonic to pre-process a lot of his monologue audio segments before he even touches them for editing - which leads to a faster and more enjoyable editing runs, as he doesn't have to focus energy on fixing low end rumbles, soft plosives and inconsistent levels between segments of speech (magic!)
  3. If for some reason you need and/or decide to REC your vocal parts at a slightly lower than suggested level (just say your guest is openly challenging Darth Vader for the Galaxies heaviest breather like Josh himself has been known to do) what Auphonic allows producers to do is to increase spoken word levels without bringing up a whole heap of the noise floor. So you can get louder without bringing up heaps of rubbish sounds at the same time. (the force!)

If Sauron was a Podcaster he'd probably say this about Auphonic (translated from the Black Speech or Mordor of course)

"One Tool to Level Them, One Tool to Filter Them, And in the Noise Reduction Bind Them."

In this episode Josh (@joshuacliston on Twitter) discusses his experiences as an owner and user of several ATR2100 and AT2005 Podcasting microphones.

Episode Question: "Is the ATR2100 microphone overrated for Podcasting?"
Short Answer: "The microphone is a fantastic sounding microphone for the money, and if you're planning to mostly produce your Podcast in-studio, I can 100% recommend the ATR2100 and also the AT2005 (the at2005 is a more externally robust microphone with the same internal specs as the ATR2100)."

Josh brings up a few issues he has with both the ATR2100 and AT2005:
• The USB socket on on both models is a little fragile for use outside of the studio or in handheld situations.
• The monitoring/headphone volume dial on the ATR2100/AT2005 is rubbish!
• The handling noise of the ATR2100 is not up to industry standards (Josh considers the SM58 as the everyman's ind. std. for a handheld microphones).

Thought Technology Takeaway: "Always consider the reasons why a particular podcasting "GURU" thinks a certain way about Podcasting - it's rarely because it's the best thing for you and your show!"

What the FRAK is the The Podcasters' Survival Guide? ..you might be asking.
Well, in this inaugural episode of the show your host (and resident anti-Guru) Josh Liston lays it all out.

In short, TPSguide is both a Q&A show for content focussed Podcasters, but it's also a reaction to most of the marketeers, coaches, consultants and former-radio "experts" who are trying to extract as much money from Podcasters as they can, as quickly as they can.

Remember: "The only thing the Zombie of a Podcasting Consultant wants more than your brains, is the money in your wallet.."
