Josh L and Josh A talk podcast background noise, bad recording quality, and being a better podcast guest and/or co-host by having superior sound quality.

Josh L also introduces his new USB interface the Scarlett 2i4 powering his CL-1 Cloudlifter and Heil PR40 Microphone - the results were pretty handy, and Josh A said Josh L sounded great coming through Skype. The Scarlett 2i4 was incredibly easy to set up (on a iMac in this case), has smooth controls, clean gain, and great build quality.

Podcasting gear used in this episode:

  • Josh L: Heil PR40 > CL-1 Cloudlifter > Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 > Audacity/Skype > Audition for post-prod.
  • Josh A: ATR2100 > Audacity/Skype > Audition for post-prod.

Josh L busts out the Heil PR40 for the first and possibly last time on #SATT (as he was thinking of selling the microphone) but the results were much better than expected. And now that Josh L is 400+ podcast episodes into Podcasting journey, his "improved Podcasting voice" (slightly people slightly) makes the Heil PR40 a different microphone.

How do you think Josh L sounded on the Heil PR40?

Podcasting gear used in this episode:

  • Josh L: Heil PR40 > CL-1 Cloudlifter > Zoom H5 > Audacity/Skype > Audition for post-prod.
  • Josh A: ATR2100 > Audacity/Skype > Audition for post-prod.

Josh L tells Josh A about how he traded in his AT2005 microphones for a pair of Shure SM58's for handheld podcast interviews. Below are just some of the reasons the SM58's truned out to be the better microphones for podcast interviews - where the microphones were handheld and/or passed around.

The SM58 was simply better for handheld applications.

  • The SM58 has far less handling-noise than the AT2005 (Josh A says the ATR2100 is also pretty noisey when handled).
  • The SM58 is a tougher build, and is much more likely to take a drop, bump, spill or tug.
  • The SM58 has a much nicer XLR connector and is more resistent to Plosive P's.

Podcasting gear used in this episode:

  • Josh L: MXL USB.009 > Audacity/Skype > Audition for post-prod.
  • Josh A: ATR2100 > Audacity/Skype > Audition for post-prod.

In this episode Josh Liston and Josh Armour discuss how Josh L was lacking information for one of his Podcast topics (the guys refer to that information as Podcast Source Material) and they talk about what he should have done about the lack of source-material. Josh A shares another story about having more than enough raw podcasting information but having certain essential parts of that source-material lacking, and having to run with it (until the last second anyway).

Episode Idea: If your Podcasting plan is to draw the majority of your source-material from existing online outlets, incl. podcasts, articles, blog posts, YouTube videos and more, do take the extra time to make sure the information-well isn't likely to run dry.

Podcasting gear used in this episode:

  • Josh A: ATR2100 > Audacity/Google Hangouts > Audition for post-prod.

In this episode Josh L and Josh A discuss the frustrations they have been having of late around shows they both enjoy that aren't double checking that their .mp3's/episodes are working correctly before promoting/marketing those episodes.

Episode Idea: Make sure the last step in your Podcasting work-flow is to check that your episodes are working correctly - both at source (like Libsyn for example) and in the major apps (like iTunes on the desktop and/or the iTunes Podcasts App for iOS).

Josh L and Josh A share their final thoughts on the recent updates to the Ringr App for iOS and Android (for June 2015 at least, ha).

What is better in Ringr:

  • The in-call experience was much clearer (higher fidelity), much quiter (less slap-backs, noises, crackles and pops), and more balanced (volume wise)
  • The Android version 5.1 of Ringr now allows for better volume control, and solid interface tweaks.
  • The iOS update featured some nice tweaks to the interface incl. a clearer transition from call to upload sequence.

Podcasting gear used in this episode:

  • Josh L: Apple Earbuds > iPhone 6+ > Ringr for iOS (from the Corolla)
  • Josh A: HTC earbuds > HTC Desire > Ringr for Android.

@SATTpodcast has a unique production workflow. And in this episode of Social Audio Think Tank we take you through a step-by-step guide to how we produce the show currently, and why we believe that if you invest in process and order, you can move beyond production worries and let the content shine! So feel free to cheery-pick what you think will work for your Podcast workflow, and leave out what you think won't - send your questions to the contacts below and enjoy the flow.

OK let's do this.

The Step-by-Step of SATT's podcast production workflow.

  1. Josh L (MXL USB.009 mic > REC in Audacity) and Josh A (ATR2100 USB mic > REC in Audacity). We record a Double-Ender in .wav (we aim for a recording level between -20 and -12 in Audacity).
  2. Josh A then uploads his side of our show to wetransfer .com in .wav and Josh L downloads that .wav file within 24hours generally.
  3. Josh L then puts both individual .wavs through the desktop version of the Auphonic App. (See below for the settings Josh L is currently using). We then output to .wav
  4. From Auphonic both processed .wav files go back into Audacity for basic content edits incl. aligning the Double-Ender, removing coughs, sniffles and keyboard strokes, and finally we hard EQ (a bass cut at 180db and below) any Plosives in the file. We then output to .wav as a finished voice edit.
  5. The voice edit .wav then goes into Audition for further post-production - firstly we apply the male-voice DeEsser pre-set (to remove ssSibilant sounds) and then we run a track-wide 80db and below bass cut. (See the exact 20 band Graphic EQ Josh L uses below).
  6. Music is then added to  the fully processed track and then outputted as a .wav file.
  7. That final .wav file is then converted to a 128kbs .mp3 in iTunes, and the iD3 tags (.mp3 meta-data) is added and the .mp3 file is drag and dropped onto the desktop.
  8. The final step in the process is to take the finished .mp3 file and upload it to Libsyn - #SATT uses Libsyn as the shows primary RSS Feed so episode titles and full show-notes and links etc are added to the Libsyn backend.
  9. Once the show is published Josh L listens to the whole show in Castro for iOS, and then checks that the Podcast is syndicating properly to iTunes Podcasts, Overcast, Stitcher and Pocketcasts.
  10. The final step in the process is for Josh L to manually upload the finished .mp3 file to Soundcloud and Spreaker - copy and paste is a savior here for show notes and meta-data. The Soundcloud player for that latest episode is then embeded into the episode post on the #satt wesbite - with the text content of the post coming from Soundcloud also. Note: copy/paste might not be great SEO here, but it's definitely great for JOSH L's Pod-sanity!

In this episode Josh L and Josh A share some more thoughts on the Podcast recording app Ringr Mobile Website. (Josh L on iOS and Josh A on Android)

What Josh L did in post to the previous episode, and to the episode you're currently listening to:

  1. Opened the interviewer and interviewee files in Audacity and cleaned up some coughs, bumps and sniffles - exported as .wav1
  2. .wav was run through Auphonic for levelling and slight noise reduction - exported as .wav2
  3. .wav2 into Audition for EQ and Desser - exported as .wav3
  4. .wav3 into iTunes for .mp3 encoding
  5. .mp3 into Libsyn Upload.

The guys and their happiness with Ringr's App-iness:

  • Q) What was Ringr Mobile like to use? A) The App is generally very easy to use, and once you get your head around the Invite System (as the interviewer) and the Invite Codes (as the interviewee) the rest is butter.
  • Q) What was the in-call experience like as a user? A) This needs work, as the quality is low and on Josh A's side of the call (the Android side) he found the lack of volume controls to be bothersome.
  • Q) What is the quality like? IT'S REALLY REALLY GOOD considering how easy Ringr is to use. :)

The quality of Ringr's final product:

Overall it sounded great, was super fast to get back to us, was easy to access, and had a great natural vibe (like a phone call with a mate, without the rubbish sound of a traditional phone or mobile call).

Podcasting gear used in this episode:

  • Josh L: Apple Earbuds > iPhone 6+ > Ringr for iOS (from the Corolla)

In this episode Jackson joins Josh (@joshuacliston) for his last episode for a while (or possibly ever), and that is exactly what this episode is about - how to take a long-term break from Podcasting, how that can make a Podcaster feel, and why sometimes it just has to be that way.

Jackson shares his thoughts on:

  • How his new job and his upcoming Art Exhibition have made Podcasting at the hobby level just too hard to commit to (March-July 2015).
  • How Jackson's new much-shorter commute has made Podcast listening much harder than before, and how even his favourite shows are "suffering."
  • How it feels to be stepping away from something he loves so much, both as a creator and a listener.
  • What he is going to miss most about Podcasting, and what he isn't going to miss one bit.
  • What is most special about Podcasting (Josh and Jackson) share this idea.. You need to listen in to hear it ;)

Podcasting gear used:

  • Josh: MXL USB.009 > Audacity/FaceTime > Audition for post-prod.
  • Jackson: AT2005 > Audacity/FaceTime > Audition for post-prod.

Josh continues his conversation with Adam Ryan (@InAllAirness) from the InAllAirness Podcast, and the guys go even deeper into working with high profile guests, and also guests that might not be all that familiar with Podcasting.

The guys chat about:

  • How does Adam keep his conversations on point without making everything about MJ23 and not about his current guest?
  • What was Adam's early Podcast tech, and how has that changed?
  • How has the ATR2100 microphone and Zoom H6 digital recorder improved the InAllAirness Podcast?
  • Editing the Podcast for content quality.

Josh chats with Adam Ryan from the InAllAirness Podcast (Josh's favourite Australian sports Podcast). InAllAirness is a Michael Jordan-era NBA History show, and a good one at that.

What the guys discuss in part 1:

  • Why Adam started his show (clue: he started the show he thought was missing from the Podcast world, so instead of just sitting around wishing a Jordan-era NBA show existed - he just went about building one himself).
  • Adam's intensity in researching his guests, and how that research allows him to flow more freely with his interviews (clue: the more you know about your show guests, the more easily you can go where the interview is taking you).
  • How Adam first went about getting great guests, and how he found that getting one or two great contacts/guests early on can cascade into more and more unique/exclusive guests.
  • How Adam is shining a light on the lesser known places in the NBA and world basketball and how that makes his show even more niche, and even BETTER - Josh's words that one ;)

Podcasting gear used in this interview:

  • Josh: MXL USB.009 > Skype/Audacity (Double-ender) > Audition for post-prod.
  • Adam: ATR2100 > Skype/Digital Recorder (Double-ender) > Josh > Post-prod.

What you will get in part 2 of the interview with Adam (out soon):

  • Adam's thoughts on Podcasting gear, and how he has a second NBA History podcast.
  • Much more NBA Podcasting good-ness!

Josh and Jackson (@GxJackson) share their thoughts on Podcasting Apps (for listening), and what features would Josh (@joshuacliston) add to make his favourite App-Archetype CASTRO absolutely perfect. ;)

Some blabbering blabbers:

  1. 115db bass cut button (or graphic EQ)
  2. Variable playback speed (slider or digital knob)
  3. A total hours listened counter (like the Audible App has for audio-books) (it would have selectable time ranges day/wk/month/yr/all time)
  4. Badges based on total listening that users can send pics of to show producers ..and show producers can use to promote as "fan contests."
  5. Auto fade-in button: so you can avoid being blown out by really LOUD show-openings
